Sassy Sunday: The Unspoken Rules of Wearing Bright Lipstick

 

 

 

 

 

If you’re like me, then you love brightly colored lip finishes. They have become extremely popular lately and in general, they look great. That said, I think there is a lot that no one has mentioned in regards to lipstick application and preparation. So as a stylish and outspoken blogger, I feel it is my duty to point out a couple of things that everyone needs to do to perfect their lipstick game. So here goes.

1) Wax your upper lip.
Yep, I just went there. As taboo as it may be, someone needs to say it. So, let me be the first to admit, I get my lip waxed. In fact, most girls do. Hair grows on your upper lip, fact. It needs to be waxed, fact. There is no shame in waxing your lip, unless of course, you don’t wax it. Because that is shameful. You can have the most beautiful lipstick on, but the hint of a mustache can ruin any look.

2) Whiten your teeth.
When you slide on lipstick, you are not only adding a pop of color to your lips, but you are also accenting your smile. Highlighting a dull or yellow smile is not a good look. So, make sure your teeth are pearly white before applying an accent color.

3) Exfoliate your lips.
I know it’s cold outside and it’s easy for your lips to get chapped, but before applying your favorite color, it is essential that you exfoliate your lips. Lipstick clinging to flaky peel of skin is not cute. Use a product that has texture (I personally use Mary Kay Lip Mask), let it set and then rub it off with a textured wash cloth. That should make them baby soft!


4) Prime and line.
After exfoliating, make sure to moisturize! Adding a primer and moisturizer in one is the perfect base for lipstick. Before putting tube to lip, though, make sure you line your lips! If you do not have a lip pencil to match what you are using, simply take a thin brush and use the lipstick itself to line your lips. Then set it into place and apply the rest of your coverage. No one wants lipstick bleeding.

5) Contour if needed.
If you have thin lips, be sure to add the illusion of fullness through contouring. After all, two bright, thin lines don’t look all that flattering. Simply add a darker stain to the corners of the mouth and a lighter one in the center front to make more of a pout. I do it all the time and it works wonders!


Bonus Advice: Do not wear brightly colored lipstick in large groups. What was it, Workaholics that said “Only one fedora per group”? Same rule applies.
A group of girls all wearing bright lipstick can look a bit busy and quite frankly can look a bit like everyone is trying to hard. So avoid the Crayon box look and take turns making a statement. 

Additional Advice: (Learned this one the hard way this week.) If you are sick and blowing your nose a lot, do not wear lipstick. When you blow your nose, you will subsequently then also also wipe off the lipstick from your upper lip. It will smear and make a mess, and it will make your bottom lip look crazy. So, just wait until you are well to avoid the hassle.
